WHAT IS WELDING
Welding Definition 1 - welding is the process of joining different materials. 
welding produces a union of material by heating them to suitable temperature, with or without the application of pressure or by the application of pressure alone with or without filler metal.

Welding Definition 2 - Welding is process of joining two similar or dissimilar metals using heat to melt and fuse them together permanently with and without application of pressure & with or without using filler metal.

ADVANTAGES OF WELDING

  • gives freedom in design.
  • gives portability with selected instruments.
  • a good weld is as strong as parent metal.
  • general welding equipment are not costly.
  • large no of metals and alloys  both similar and dissimilar can be welded .
  • it can be mechanized and automated.

DISADVANTAGES OF WELDING

  • it results in residual stresses and distortion.
  • gives harmful radiations,fumes and spatters.
  • jigs and fixtures are required to hold and position the work piece to be welded.
  • fixtures required for distortion control.
  • edge preparation is required.
  • it needs stress relief heat treatment like preheating postheating etc.
  • skilled welder is required
  • the structure of weld is not the same as that of base metal.
  • welding requires various testings. NDT and DT

welding is classified on the basis of 
  • source of heat i.e. flame,arc etc.
  • based on the interaction
  • i)solid state welding  ii)liquid state welding(fusion welding)
